The Ha Giang Loop is a legendary 4–5-day motorcycle journey through northern Vietnam’s Ha Giang Province. Covering approximately 500–600 km, the route winds through dramatic mountain passes, limestone plateaus, deep valleys, and remote ethnic villages, making it one of Vietnam’s most spectacular road trips.
Starting and ending in Ha Giang City, the classic route takes travelers through iconic landmarks including Bac Sum Pass, Heaven Gate, Tham Ma Pass, Ma Pi Leng Pass, Dong Van Old Quarter, Meo Vac, Du Gia, and Lung Tam.
Beyond the mountain roads, the Ha Giang Loop offers an authentic cultural experience. Travelers can stay in local family homestays, taste traditional mountain cuisine, and connect with H’Mong, Tay, and Dao communities while discovering a less-touristy side of northern Vietnam.
Day 1: Hanoi → Ha Giang City → Dong Van (~150 km)
Start: Hanoi Old Quarter
Route: Ha Giang City → Bac Sum Pass → Quan Ba → Tham Ma Pass → Dong Van
The journey begins with an overnight VIP sleeper bus from Hanoi Old Quarter to Ha Giang City, allowing travelers to arrive refreshed for an early morning departure.
After gearing up, riders tackle Bac Sum Pass, the first major climb onto the Dong Van Karst Plateau. The route continues through Heaven Gate in Quan Ba, offering panoramic views of the iconic Twin Mountains, before heading toward Chin Khoanh Ramp and Tham Ma Pass.
A highlight of the day, Tham Ma Pass features a famous nine-turn serpentine road reaching an elevation of around 2,500 meters. The journey concludes with a visit to the historic H’Mong King’s Palace in Sa Phin, followed by check-in at a hotel or homestay in Dong Van.

Day 2: Dong Van → Ma Pi Leng Pass → Du Gia (~120 km)
Start: Dong Van Old Quarter
Route: Ma Pi Leng Pass → Nho Que River → Meo Vac → Du Gia
Day 2 takes travelers to the crown jewel of the Ha Giang Loop: Ma Pi Leng Pass. Rising to around 2,000 meters, this dramatic cliffside road offers spectacular views over the turquoise Nho Que River and the surrounding limestone mountains.
Travelers can hike part of the Ma Pi Leng Sky Walk for panoramic views before taking a boat trip through the spectacular Tu San Canyon.
After passing through Meo Vac, the route continues along quieter mountain roads toward Du Gia Village. The evening is spent at Du Gia Ecolodge, with traditional stilt-house accommodation, home-cooked meals, and warm local hospitality.

Day 3: Du Gia Waterfall → Lung Tam Village → Hanoi (~250 km)

The final morning begins at Du Gia Waterfall, where travelers can enjoy a refreshing swim in the natural mountain pools.
The journey then continues to Lung Tam Village, where local H’Mong women showcase traditional crafts, including hemp processing, natural indigo dyeing, and hand-loom weaving.
After passing the Twin Mountains once again on the return to Ha Giang City, travelers board a comfortable VIP sleeper bus or limousine for the evening journey back to Hanoi Old Quarter.

However, beginners, nervous drivers, or non-riders are strongly advised to join as passengers behind professional local “Easy Riders,” ensuring complete safety while enjoying the scenery.
When appropriate precautions are taken, the loop is safe. Main risk factors include steep cliffside drops, sharp hairpin turns, sudden fog or rain, and loose gravel on unpaved sections. Risks are minimized by riding with licensed local guides, avoiding high speeds, wearing full protective gear, and avoiding self-driving during heavy monsoon rains.
The ideal windows are September to November (autumn) and March to April (spring). Autumn brings dry weather, clear skies, ripe yellow rice terraces, and buckwheat flower blooms. Spring offers mild temperatures and colorful blossom seasons. Winter months (December to February) can be cold and foggy, while summer (May to August) brings monsoon rain showers.
Self-driving requires a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) under the 1968 Convention that explicitly includes a motorcycle endorsement from your home country. Additionally, riders must hold valid travel insurance that covers motorcycling in Vietnam.
